Part II: Environmental Commodities
Environmental Commodities: Jason Porter
After our crew remove a tree, the wood takes on new life as one of our Environmental Commodities. We mulch, compost and carbonize the wood and mix it with beneficial additives like cow manure to make premium soil products like Charpost and Moo-Mix.
Also known as activated carbon, biochar is a form of charcoal that is designed to be mixed with soil, replenishing the carbon which naturally comes from wildfires. Biochar is highly porous and adsorbent, making it an ideal home for moisture and soil biology. It can be applied directly to the soil as-is, or mixed with compost to make Charpost.
The act of creating Biochar prevents the carbon from being emitted into the atmosphere, locking it into a stable form and sequestering it in the soil, where it facilitates the capture of more carbon by increasing soil fertility.
